BEFORE & AFTER THE RFC Luis J.A.Wee
Recreational off-road activity is a relatively new phenomenon in Vietnam. It was only a couple of years ago that small group of enthusiasts started going off-road, both in the southern and northern regions of the country. When Off-Road VN Club from Hanoi sent in their first 4x4 team last year to Rainforest Challenge (RFC), they created history and surprised many both inside and outside the country.
During the RFC Vietnam rendezvous with members of Off-Road VN club recently at the end of May in both Hanoi and Moc Chau outing, they shared with me on their experiences before and after the RFC.
It was all experimental, smiled Vinh, the driver from Team 155 hailing from Hanoi. But, it was a serious team effort from our club, especially from our committee members and we all worked very hard to make it to the RFC, he added. Indeed, it was a tremendous effort, not only had they to put up a reasonably good vehicle but both man and machine must also survive the 10 days of the event.
Their vehicle, a Land Cruiser pick-up (single cab) 1997 FZ175 fitted with 1KZ engine, was upgraded and modified to their best of abilities. Being first-timers, they had to learn everything from scratch right up to the shipping of the car to Malaysia. Even though our strategy is to go through the entire route, our car still needs to be good enough to stand the day to day punishment, but, we do not know how much is enough yet until they face the real situations in the event, added Tran Hung, the Vice President of the club.
After much trial and error, their perseverance paid off, they not only sent off the first Vietnamese team to RFC and also sent a large contingent of supporters to the event. Now, five months after the event, what are their views?
We learnt a lot of valuable lessons, Vinh was the first to comment. Our hardware needs to be lighter but stronger and more stable. So, we have replaced the front and back axles with VX80, increase the track width, install new control arms, shocks, springs and the PTO winch, he further commented.
We also need a good plan and tactic for the SS, more skilled driving, less aggressive to avoid damaging the car for the long run. Most of all, we learn from the other experienced teams and marshals on how to handle the many kinds of situations that we have never faced before, he added. We saw the most awesome struggle for man and machines at first hand in the Twilight Zone, the most advanced on-the-spot lessons ever, he summed up.
Last year entry has made us even more determined to do better in this years RFC. We shall prepare well with our hard earned lessons. So, we are now further testing ourselves with more outings like this one at Moc Chau, Vu Tien Son, the club President added with a smile. Yes, indeed, they are a determined and passionate lot, which will be a good thing for recreational 4x4 here in Vietnam.
However, in the bigger perspective, acquiring off-road recreational skills is not only good for competing in extreme events, but it also has a nationalistic value which is applicable not only to everyone here in Vietnam but also elsewhere in the 4x4 world. That is, such off-road skills will come in very useful in times of national disasters like flood, landslide, earthquake and mudslide. For example, paved roads will turn into instant off-road by flood waters or landslides or earthquakes. It is us, the experienced 4x4 off-road enthusiasts who have the skills and means to reach these inaccessible places to bring relief and supplies if properly coordinated with the authorities.
Simply put, we can get into the disaster zone faster than any other land vehicles. Now, thats a very important role that we can play for the nation. Therefore, learning the correct techniques in 4x4 driving and recovery across muddy tracks, uphill, downhill, ruts and rocky surfaces and lessons learnt before and after the RFC are more than just a recreational sports, its a national asset to the nation.
