I've raced expert level desert, Enduro and cross country (MX pro too but not on XRs).
I've had 5 XR250s, 2 XR600s, 2 KTM450exc and a LOT of Two stroke 250 & 500s.
I can't begin to say how great those XR250s are (I know this is about XR400, it all fits)
Conditions will very a LOT but I did the best I ever did on XR250s.
All my XRs were 100% stock, air box snorkel and the small baffle removed.
It sounds stupid but an XR250 is crazy fast on a gnarly down hill as well as a nasty up hill.
Nothing better that beating a bunch of WR, CRF, KTM... whatevers on an XR250 after 100 miles
Can't begin to describe the feeling finishing top 20 of over 400 bikes on THE only air cooled bike.
My deciding factor between XR250 & XR400 was that 6th gear
I know XR400 is a great bike too, it's just different
Its all how you ride 'em
I've raced with/against Ty Davis, Scott Summers, Larry Rossler and the late Danny Hammel, riders at that lever are unbelievably fast.
