10 months and about 12000 clicks in its life, my 450D died. I was shooting a burst when I heard a sad glitching inside. Kinda like in Independence Day when Russell Case wanted to fire his Sidewinder at the alien spaceship, upon which the missile jammed.
I immediately knew the shutter died. First I tried turning on/off - to no avail of course. So I unscrewed the good ol' kitlens and took a peek inside. I tried working the shutter release, and saw the shutter and the curtain moved outward instead of up and down. I manually moved the curtain (worryingly exposing the sensor) and saw that the metal pegs that connected the shutter and curtain were dislodged. I tried realigning them, but part of the plastic mechanism was bent. So there is no way to reassemble the mechanism without opening the entire device.
By a stroke of blind luck, or perhaps divine fate, the death occured right after an important congress I had to attend. Also, it happened right where I bought the camera (Hong Kong). So I'm gonna leave the camera here, send the guarantee and purchase papers as soon as I get back, and then wait.
I think 4 things may happen:
1) The shutter assembly will be fixed and/or replaced free of charge.
2) The shutter assembly will be fixed but at a reasonable charge
3) The shutter assembly will be fixed but at an unreasonable charge
4) Canon will refuse repair. There are some faint smudges visible on the plastic and sensor.
In scenarios 3 and 4, I'll probably wait and either buy a new 450D or a 40D/50D. I'd consider the latters because of the autofocus, which I found to be lacking in the 450D.
I never dropped my camera. I very seldomly changed lenses (only have the kitlens and a 50-200 kit). I meticulously cleaned my camera weekly using a fine brush.
So I guess **** just happened. Life goes on.
They replaced not only the shutter, but also the sensor. So basically I have a new camera. I also noticed they fixed the led bleed of the lowermost autofocus led.
Very happy with Canon HK, had a very professional and pleasant experience with their repair department and customer services. Very outraged at Belgian customs - HK Speedpost got the parcel in 2 days to Belgium, but customs managed to stall it 3 weeks (!!) with me having to go through great lenghts contacting them and providing them paperwork (which Canon HK delivered in 12 hours).
