How to Replace the Headlight Switch on a 1996 Cherokee

The 1996 Jeep Cherokee uses a pull/push style headlight switch mounted in the dash, to the left of the steering wheel. The headlight switch controls all the exterior lights on the Jeep as well as some interior lights and the instrument panel lighting. If the switch fails, it can affect the headlights, the parking lights or any other light that runs through the switch. A replacement headlight switch is available from any Jeep dealership and some auto parts stores.
Things You'll Need:
Wrench set
Phillips screwdriver
Flat screwdriver
Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable from the negative post on the battery, using a wrench to remove the retaining bolts. Pull the cable loose.

Remove the two mounting screws on the knee blocker or lower trim panel below the steering wheel. Use a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the panel out away from the dash and work the two clips loose along the bottom edge of the panel. They will pop out with a little work.

Reach up under the dash and locate the headlight switch. Depress the small button on the inboard side of the switch body, then pull the knob and shaft on the front of the headlight switch out of the switch body.

Remove the spanner nut on the front of the dash where the rod and knob attach, using a flat screwdriver. Pull the headlight switch out of the dash from the rear and disconnect the two wiring harness connectors from the switch. Release the locking tabs on the two connectors and the plugs will pull loose easily. Discard the old switch but keep the knob and rod that you pulled out of the old switch.

Connect the wiring harness connectors to the headlight switch, making sure the locking tabs engage. Position the switch into the hole in the dash from the rear and install the spanner nut to secure the switch, tightening the nut with a flat screwdriver.

Slide the knob and switch rod into the new switch. Push it all the way in until the rod snaps into the switch.

Install the knee blocker panel under the steering column, snapping the lower edge into the retaining clips on the dash. Install the two screws in the top edge and tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver to secure the panel.

Install the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Turn the headlight switch on to test the repair.
