A high performance fuel cell AMV (Alternative Mobility Vehicle) called the "Aggressor" is now being tested by the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Research, Development, and Engineering Center's (TARDEC) National Automotive Center. Developed by Quantum Technologies in Southern California, the off-road fuel cell vehicle aims at providing high mobility in stealth operations for U.S. troops.
Among the vehicle's features are virtually silent operation, reduced thermal signature, and superior acceleration compared to similar diesel or gasoline all-terrain vehicles. The AMV can additionally provide on-board electrical power generation for communications, surveillance, and other duties in the field.
The vehicle is powered by a 10 kW fuel cell coupled with an energy storage module in a parallel hybrid configuration, with gaseous hydrogen carried in Quantum carbon fiber storage tanks. A single high-torque electric motor drives the rear wheels. The Aggressor reportedly accelerates twice as fast as an unmodified gasoline-powered all-terrain vehicle up to 40 mph, with an ungoverned top speed of 80 mph. Onboard electronics control drivetrain torque and speed to optimize traction and safety.
Yes, we know. Since TARDEC's mission is to explore dual-use technology that applies to both military and civilian life, we're sure there are plenty of people out there now wondering when they'll get a shot at seeing one of these at their local off-road vehicle supplier. Since this is an experimental fuel cell vehicle...that won't be anytime soon.
